Federer loses to fellow Swiss in rainy Monte-Carlo

04/16/2009 - Monte-Carlo, Monaco (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Former world No. 1 superstar Roger Federer was upset by fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka on a rainy Thursday at the $3.6 million Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, the third ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event of the year.

The 13th-seeded Wawrinka stunned the second-seeded Federer 6-4, 7-5 on the red clay at the prestigious Monte-Carlo Country Club. Federer had reached the last three finals here, losing to current world No. 1 Rafael Nadal on all three occasions.

Wawrinka pulled off the upset in 1 hour, 50 minutes, as he broke Federer's serve three times, while the 13-time major champ could manage only one break in the bout.

The world No. 16 Wawrinka captured a doubles gold medal alongside Federer at last year's Olympic Games in Beijing.

The reigning five-time U.S. Open titlist Federer has yet to win a title this season. He lost to Nadal in January's Australian Open final.

A top-seeded and reigning four-time Monte-Carlo champion Nadal had his third- round match suspended because of rain on Day 5 here. The reigning Aussie Open, Wimbledon and French Open champion was trailing Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti, a qualifier this week, 0-1 in the first set when play was called.

Third-seeded Serbian star Novak Djokovic prevailed in between rain drops, as he topped capable Spaniard Albert Montanes 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-0, while fourth- seeded surging Brit Andy Murray will have to wait until Friday to complete his third-rounder against Italian qualifier Fabio Fognini. The U.S. Open runner-up and Miami Masters titlist Murray was leading Fognini 7-6 (13-11), 1-0 when play was called for the day. Murray topped Djokovic in the Miami finale two weeks ago.

Two other matches were completed on Thursday, as seventh-seeded Fernando Verdasco whipped 10th-seeded fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 6-2, 6-1 and German qualifier Andreas Beck overcame Argentine Juan Monaco 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Two other matches were postponed altogether, as eighth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko was scheduled to meet 12th-seeded Argentine David Nalbandian and Italian Simone Bolelli was slated to face Croatian wild card Ivan Ljubicic. Those matches are now part of Friday's schedule.

Two quarterfinal matches are already on the Friday schedule, as Djokovic will encounter Verdasco and Wawrinka will take on Beck.

The 2009 Monte-Carlo winner will collect $580,500.

Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. The Steelers jumped on Baltimore early, building a 13-0 first half lead, and never let up on their way to a fairly easy win. Although the Ravens did close to within two points in the fourth quarter, it never appeared as if they had enough offense to pull off the upset.

The Steelers dominating defense held Baltimore to a total of 198 yards while allowing them to convert just three third downs in 13 attempts. Pittsburgh also forced quarterback Joe Flacco into three interceptions, one of which safety Troy Polamalu returned fourty yards for a touchdown.

The Cardinals, by far the playoff team with the longest odds to reach Super Bowl XLIII, did so yesterday with a 32-25 upset of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship. Arizona charged out of the gates and built a 24-6 halftime lead that had the Eagles venerable defense reeling. Quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did most of the damage, connecting on three first half touchdowns.

Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.

MySportsbook.com's Super Bowl XLIII Betting Odds:

Pittsburgh Steelers -6.5 (-110), Over 46.5 (-110), -260 (Money line)

Arizona Cardinals +6.5 (-110), Under 46.5 (-110), +220 (Money line)

Matt Foust won both of his conference championship plays yesterday and he is ready to serve up plenty of Super Bowl action. Each individual play costs $15.00, however, MySportsbook.com recommends purchasing Matt's NFL Playoff Package which includes all of Matt's Super Bowl props and picks from just $45.00.
